Join the team from The Hershey Company as we enjoy a motorcycle ride from Hershey to Susquehannock State Park and raise money for kids like Sammy through Children's Miracle Network at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.
In October of 2008, Sammy, her younger sister Lexi and their friends were enjoying a day of picking apples and making cider. While Sammy was helping to clean up, the unthinkable happened. A tree branch fell more than 50 feet onto the left side of her head. Sammy was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors determined she had fractured her skull in two places, ruptured her spleen and was bleeding internally. After a surgeon removed the left side of Sammy’s skull to reduce the swelling on her brain, she was transported to Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital.
Doctors told Sammy’s family that she had suffered a severe brain stroke and brain stem injury and had five compression fractures to her thoracic spine. Sammy’s neurologist believed that she would survive, but never wake up. Sammy’s family was devastated.
Lexi did not want to leave her sister’s bedside. The Child Life staff at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital would often take Lexi to the playroom and she would come back with her hospital doll that had many of the same tubes as Sammy. She would describe how each tube was used to make her baby all better – just like Sammy.
Three and a half weeks later, Sammy was removed from her respirator. Eventually she was healthy enough to go to Pediatric Rehab where the staff taught her family so much about their “new little Sammy.”
